הפרויקט שלא נגמר | The Never Ending Project

אחרי תקופה ארוכה של עבודה גמרתי לעבוד על פרוייקט שהיה כל-כך ארוך שהוא זכה אצלנו בבית לכינוי - הפרוייקט שלא נגמר. ("על מה אתה עובד? על הפרוייקט שלא נגמר"). הפרוייקט כולל כ-260 איורים יחסית פשוטים, עבדתי עליו כ-16 חודשים ובסופו של דבר, למרות הכינוי שדבק בו - הוא כן נגמר.
הוא עדיין לא ראה אור ולכן לא אוכל לפרט לגבי מהותו - רק אומר שהוא פונה לילדים שעושים את צעדיהם הראשונים בקריאה, וכולל מספר רב של סיפורים קצרים. הפרוייקט יראה אור בהוצאת איגואנה בשיתוף הוצאת כנרת. למרות הסודיות שאופפת את הפרוייקט לעת-עתה, קיבלתי אישור לחלוק כאן מספר איורים ממנו.

אגב, הציקלופ שמככב באחד הסיפורים מבוסס על סקיצות שעשיתי לפרוייקט אחר בהוצאת עם-עובד בשנת 2006 ונפסלו, ועכשיו הוא קם לתחייה. (לחצו על התמונות להגדלה).

I have now finished my work on a project that took so long to complete that it gained the nickname "The Never Ending Project". It includes over 260 simple illustrations, I worked on it for 16 months and eventually, despite the name that stuck to it - it did end.

The project has not been published yet. so I am unable to give many details about it. I can just say it is for new readers and that it includes many short stories. It will be published by Iguana Publishers in cooperation with Kinneret Publishing House. Despite the secrecy around this project I got permission to share some images from it here. 

By the way, the cyclop shown here is based on some roughs I did in 2006 for another project and that were turned down. (click images to enlarge)

  

ספר דיגיטלי +ביקורת חדשה | A new e-book and review

השבוע ראה אור ספר דיגיטלי חדש לפעוטות שאיירתי בהוצאת e-vrit.co.il, ובו שמונה שירים קצרים של חיים נחמן ביאליק. מתאים לאייפד/פוד/פון ואנדרואיד. אפשר לצפות בתצוגת תכלית שלו בסרט המצורף:

Grandpa Has a Cow | הפרה של סבא יפת

אחרי חודשים ארוכים של המתנה סופסוף רואה אור הספר "הפרה של סבא יפת" מאת רות אורן. (הוצאת כנרת, עורכת: יעל גובר, מעצבת: לילי פרזי) את העבודה עליו גמרתי מזמן אבל הפקתו התעכבה מפני שהוא נשלח להדפסה בסין. מדובר בספר קרטון לפעוטות ובו שלושה-עשר שירים קצרצרים על חיות.

After many long months of anticipation "Grandpa has a Cow" by Ruth Oren was finally published. I finished working on this book a long time ago but its publishing was delayed because it was sent to be printed in China. It's a small cardboard book for toddlers with thirteen short poems about animals.

זה הספר השני שעבדתי בו בצבעי פנדה מדוללים (הראשון היה "על הגשר הקט"). למעשה כל הספר נוצר בפנדה צהובה ועפרונות, במקטעים נפרדים, שאחר-כך סרקתי וערכתי במחשב. כך אני יכול לשמור על החומריות היפה של הפנדה אבל לשחק עם הצבעים, ולשלוט יותר בקלות במיקום החלקים בדף בלי יותר מדי מחיקות והתחלות מחדש.  כך למשל האיור של ההיפופוטם, המראבו והברווזה נראה ככה על הנייר:

This is the second book I worked on with diluted oil pastels (the first one was "Upon the Little Bridge). This book was actually created with just a yellow oil pastel and pencils, in segments, which I later scanned. This way I could keep the nice texture of the oil pastel, but was able to easily alter the colours and change locations of elements without the need to erase and start from scratch all the time. For example, the illustration of the Hippo, Marabou and Duck looked like this on paper:

אני גם עובד מאוד מאוד מלוכלך בדרך-כלל, כך שאני לא טורח בצביעה לעבוד נקי, ומעדיף לעשות את עבודת הנקיון השחורה על המחשב.

When I work everything is usually very messy and dirty. In this technique I don't even try to work carefully, I prefer to do the slow cleaning process on the computer after I scan everything.

פוסט קצר עם קצת חדשות -

אתר חדש | New Website

עברו שבע שנים מאז שהוקם האתר הראשון שלי, ועכשיו הגיע הזמן לחדשו. אני שמח לבשר על אתר חדש ובו הרבה עבודות חדשות, שלל עדכונים והפתעות. מוזמנים לבקר.

לאחרונה גיליתי שאחד הספרים שאיירתי זכה בשני פרסים, אבל משום מה אף אחד לא טרח לספר לי על כך. מדובר בספר שאיירתי בשנת 2009 וראה אור בארה"ב ב-2010. Engineer Ari and the Sukkah Express. זה הספר השני בטרילוגית ספרי ילדים שאייריתי להוצאה אמריקאית-יהודית בה מככב נהג קטר יהודי בארץ ישראל העות'מנית. הספר השלישי בסדרה ראה אור לא מזמן.

הוא זכה להכנס לרשימת הספרים הבולטים ע"ש סידני טיילור מטעם ארגון הספריות היהודיות בארה"ב, שמסתבר שזה דבר גדול בעולם ספרי הילדים היהודיים. (הקודם בסדרה זכה במדליית הכסף של אותו הפרס, לשנת 2009). כמו כן, הוא נכנס לרשימת - Children's Book Committee at Bank Street College Best Children's Book of the Year, שזאת רשימת ספרים מומלצים לשנת 2010 שקיימת כמאה שנה וממליצה על ספרי הילדים המומלצים בכל שנה.

שני הפרסים האילו הם לספר בכללותו ולא ספציפיים לאיור, אז כמובן הקרדיט לסופרת דבורה בודין-כהן.

I recently found out that one of the books I illustrated had received two award, but somehow no-one bothered to let me know...

The book is Engineer Ari and the Sukkah Express, it's the second book in a jewish trilogy. It was published in 2010 in the USA. It's a second book in a trilogy about a jewish train engineer in Othman Palestine. The third book in the trilogy was recently published.
It got into the Notable book list award by the Sydney Taylor Notable books list from the Association of Jewish Libraries, and also to the Children's Book Committee at Bank Street COllege Best Children's Book of the year list for 2010, which is a yearly recommended book list existing about 100 years.

Both of these award listings are not specific for the illustration, but for the book as a whole, so a big credit to the author is due of course - Deborah Bodin Cohen.

אכזבות | Disappointments

בזמן האחרון עבדתי על סקיצות לספר חדש בו מככבת לביבה קופצנית וחביבה. כן, לביבה. התחלתי את הסקיצות במטבח - טיגנתי לביבות. היה טעים, אבל לא עזר בכלום.  אח"כ ציירתי הרבה לביבות. ועוד לביבות. ועוד. מסתבר שלביבה חביבה היא לא דבר פשוט לצייר. בהתחלה ניסיתי להשתמש בגרד תפוחי האדמה שיוצרת הפומפיה בשביל ליצור את תוי פניה של הלביבה. הנה כמה דוגמאות מהלביבות הראשונות. I've been working lately on roughs for a new picture book starring a happy potato fritter. Yes, you read it right - a potato fritter.  I started the roughs in the kitchen - I fried some potato fritters. They were tasty, but it didn't help much.  I then started drawing more and more  fritters. At first I tried to use the potato grates created by the grater to shape the features of the fritter. Here are a few samples from my first attempts. (Click images to enlarge). 

התוצאה הייתה יפה ומיוחדת בעיני, אבל העורכת הזכירה לי שהלביבה צריכה להיות ילדותית יותר ולכן חשבתי שצריך לוותר על רוב הפרטים שנדמו קצת לקמטים . השארתי להם רמז בשולי הלביבה הבאה, שלדעתי הייתה המוצלחת מכל מה שעשיתי:

I thought the result was beautiful and special, but the editor reminded me the fritter had to be more childish, so I thought I had to give up most of the details which really resembled facial wrinkles. I left a hint of them in the margins of this one, which I think was the most successful of all the fritters so far:

הלביבה התחבבה כבר על-ידי העורכת אולם הסופרת עדיין לא הייתה מרוצה. עשיתי עוד ועוד נסיונות, אפילו הוספתי לה ידיים. (נדמה לי שהיה עדיף בלעדיהן).

The editor liked this one, but the author wasn't. I drew more and more fritters and even gave it a pair of hands. (I think it was better off without them).

עשיתי גם סקיצה מהירה של סצנה אחת לספר, אותה דווקא היא כן חיבבה. אבל בסופו של דבר הסופרת לא הייתה שלמה עם רוב מה שעשיתי ולצערי, אחרי כ-200 סוגי לביבות, החליטו לפנות למאייר אחר.

I also made a quick rough for one scene from the book, which the author did actually like, but at the end she wan't pleased with my roughs and unfortunately, after some 200 fritters, they decided to give the job to someone else.

לסיום, בנימה אופטימית, אני שמח לבשר שאני עובד על ספר ראשון שיראה אור באנגליה, ובמקביל אני אמור להתחיל לעבוד על איורים לספר ילדים דיגיטלי לאייפד בפעם הראשונה.

On a happier note, I am happy to inform I started working on a new book to be published in the UK, and I am also supposed to start working on illustrations for a children's digital book for ipad for the first time!
