Grandpa Has a Cow | הפרה של סבא יפת

אחרי חודשים ארוכים של המתנה סופסוף רואה אור הספר "הפרה של סבא יפת" מאת רות אורן. (הוצאת כנרת, עורכת: יעל גובר, מעצבת: לילי פרזי) את העבודה עליו גמרתי מזמן אבל הפקתו התעכבה מפני שהוא נשלח להדפסה בסין. מדובר בספר קרטון לפעוטות ובו שלושה-עשר שירים קצרצרים על חיות.

After many long months of anticipation "Grandpa has a Cow" by Ruth Oren was finally published. I finished working on this book a long time ago but its publishing was delayed because it was sent to be printed in China. It's a small cardboard book for toddlers with thirteen short poems about animals.

זה הספר השני שעבדתי בו בצבעי פנדה מדוללים (הראשון היה "על הגשר הקט"). למעשה כל הספר נוצר בפנדה צהובה ועפרונות, במקטעים נפרדים, שאחר-כך סרקתי וערכתי במחשב. כך אני יכול לשמור על החומריות היפה של הפנדה אבל לשחק עם הצבעים, ולשלוט יותר בקלות במיקום החלקים בדף בלי יותר מדי מחיקות והתחלות מחדש. כך למשל האיור של ההיפופוטם, המראבו והברווזה נראה ככה על הנייר:

This is the second book I worked on with diluted oil pastels (the first one was "Upon the Little Bridge). This book was actually created with just a yellow oil pastel and pencils, in segments, which I later scanned. This way I could keep the nice texture of the oil pastel, but was able to easily alter the colours and change locations of elements without the need to erase and start from scratch all the time. For example, the illustration of the Hippo, Marabou and Duck looked like this on paper:

אני גם עובד מאוד מאוד מלוכלך בדרך-כלל, כך שאני לא טורח בצביעה לעבוד נקי, ומעדיף לעשות את עבודת הנקיון השחורה על המחשב.

When I work everything is usually very messy and dirty. In this technique I don't even try to work carefully, I prefer to do the slow cleaning process on the computer after I scan everything.

הפתעות | Surprises

לאחרונה גיליתי שאחד הספרים שאיירתי זכה בשני פרסים, אבל משום מה אף אחד לא טרח לספר לי על כך. מדובר בספר שאיירתי בשנת 2009 וראה אור בארה"ב ב-2010. Engineer Ari and the Sukkah Express. זה הספר השני בטרילוגית ספרי ילדים שאייריתי להוצאה אמריקאית-יהודית בה מככב נהג קטר יהודי בארץ ישראל העות'מנית. הספר השלישי בסדרה ראה אור לא מזמן.

הוא זכה להכנס לרשימת הספרים הבולטים ע"ש סידני טיילור מטעם ארגון הספריות היהודיות בארה"ב, שמסתבר שזה דבר גדול בעולם ספרי הילדים היהודיים. (הקודם בסדרה זכה במדליית הכסף של אותו הפרס, לשנת 2009). כמו כן, הוא נכנס לרשימת - Children's Book Committee at Bank Street College Best Children's Book of the Year, שזאת רשימת ספרים מומלצים לשנת 2010 שקיימת כמאה שנה וממליצה על ספרי הילדים המומלצים בכל שנה.

שני הפרסים האילו הם לספר בכללותו ולא ספציפיים לאיור, אז כמובן הקרדיט לסופרת דבורה בודין-כהן.

I recently found out that one of the books I illustrated had received two award, but somehow no-one bothered to let me know...

The book is Engineer Ari and the Sukkah Express, it's the second book in a jewish trilogy. It was published in 2010 in the USA. It's a second book in a trilogy about a jewish train engineer in Othman Palestine. The third book in the trilogy was recently published.
It got into the Notable book list award by the Sydney Taylor Notable books list from the Association of Jewish Libraries, and also to the Children's Book Committee at Bank Street COllege Best Children's Book of the year list for 2010, which is a yearly recommended book list existing about 100 years.

Both of these award listings are not specific for the illustration, but for the book as a whole, so a big credit to the author is due of course - Deborah Bodin Cohen.

אכזבות | Disappointments

בזמן האחרון עבדתי על סקיצות לספר חדש בו מככבת לביבה קופצנית וחביבה. כן, לביבה. התחלתי את הסקיצות במטבח - טיגנתי לביבות. היה טעים, אבל לא עזר בכלום. אח"כ ציירתי הרבה לביבות. ועוד לביבות. ועוד. מסתבר שלביבה חביבה היא לא דבר פשוט לצייר. בהתחלה ניסיתי להשתמש בגרד תפוחי האדמה שיוצרת הפומפיה בשביל ליצור את תוי פניה של הלביבה. הנה כמה דוגמאות מהלביבות הראשונות. I've been working lately on roughs for a new picture book starring a happy potato fritter. Yes, you read it right - a potato fritter. I started the roughs in the kitchen - I fried some potato fritters. They were tasty, but it didn't help much. I then started drawing more and more fritters. At first I tried to use the potato grates created by the grater to shape the features of the fritter. Here are a few samples from my first attempts. (Click images to enlarge).

התוצאה הייתה יפה ומיוחדת בעיני, אבל העורכת הזכירה לי שהלביבה צריכה להיות ילדותית יותר ולכן חשבתי שצריך לוותר על רוב הפרטים שנדמו קצת לקמטים . השארתי להם רמז בשולי הלביבה הבאה, שלדעתי הייתה המוצלחת מכל מה שעשיתי:

I thought the result was beautiful and special, but the editor reminded me the fritter had to be more childish, so I thought I had to give up most of the details which really resembled facial wrinkles. I left a hint of them in the margins of this one, which I think was the most successful of all the fritters so far:

הלביבה התחבבה כבר על-ידי העורכת אולם הסופרת עדיין לא הייתה מרוצה. עשיתי עוד ועוד נסיונות, אפילו הוספתי לה ידיים. (נדמה לי שהיה עדיף בלעדיהן).

The editor liked this one, but the author wasn't. I drew more and more fritters and even gave it a pair of hands. (I think it was better off without them).

עשיתי גם סקיצה מהירה של סצנה אחת לספר, אותה דווקא היא כן חיבבה. אבל בסופו של דבר הסופרת לא הייתה שלמה עם רוב מה שעשיתי ולצערי, אחרי כ-200 סוגי לביבות, החליטו לפנות למאייר אחר.

I also made a quick rough for one scene from the book, which the author did actually like, but at the end she wan't pleased with my roughs and unfortunately, after some 200 fritters, they decided to give the job to someone else.

לסיום, בנימה אופטימית, אני שמח לבשר שאני עובד על ספר ראשון שיראה אור באנגליה, ובמקביל אני אמור להתחיל לעבוד על איורים לספר ילדים דיגיטלי לאייפד בפעם הראשונה.

On a happier note, I am happy to inform I started working on a new book to be published in the UK, and I am also supposed to start working on illustrations for a children's digital book for ipad for the first time!

אחרי יותר משנתיים של עבודה הושקה לאחרונה גרסאת הבטא של משחק מחשב שאני ועוד שני חברים עבדנו עליו. Misfortune הוא משחק תפקידים ליחיד (כן, כמו לפני 15 שנה!) בו השחקן מוצא עצמו אבוד בעיר זרה השורצת בשודדים, מכונות מוזרות וסנאים גדולים. הגיבור,בחור מגושם וחסר מזל, מוצא עצמו תקוע באי זר ומוזר, והעלילה הפתלתלה מתפחחת לאט בעזרת סדרה של מבוכים מוזרים ומשימות משונות ומצחיקות.

Two friends and I have been working for over two years on a new browser based game. We have recently released a beta version of it. Misfortune is a single player role playing game, in which the player finds himself lost in a town full with vicious pirates, strange machines and giant squirrels. The hero, a clumsy unfortunate lad, finds himself stranded on a strange island, and the plot develops through a series of strange and funny missions.

שלושה דברים מייחדים את המשחק שלנו:

1. המשחק מבוסס עלילה סיפורית רחבת היקף, מצחיקה ומשעשעת.

2. הוא מושתת על מנוע שבונה מבוכים באופן רנדומלי ומפזר בתוכם מפלצות, חפצים, דלתות ומאורעות ייחודיים.

3. אני ציירתי אותו.

מבחינה ויזואלית וסיפורית החלטנו להתמקד בז'אנר הסטימפאנק, בשילוב פיראטים. למה? כי זה מוזר. (סטימפאנק על רגל אחת - ז'אנר של מדע בדיוני בו הטכנולוגיה השולטת היא טכנולוגית קיטור). מבחינה ויזואלית זה אומר הרבה מתכת, עץ, דודים, שסתומים, צינורות, והרבה מקום להתפרע. כהרגלי, למרות שמדובר במשחק פלאש, ציירתי את הכל בעפרון, וצבעתי בפוטושופ.

Three things make our game unique:

1. It is based on a very complex and funny story.

2. It's based on a unique engine which randomly creates mazes and places in them monsters, items and events.

3. I drew it.

Visually, we have decided to concentrate on a Steampunk theme, to which we added some pirates. Why? Because it's strange. That means I could use lots of metal, wood, pipes, boilers, valves, and so on, and have room to go a bit wild. As usual, though it is a Flash game, I drew all items with a pencil and colored them with Photoshop.

את הדמות המרכזית ניתן להלביש ולחמש במהלך המשחק איך שרוצים, ולכן, לאחר שייצרתי את הדמות המרכזית, הייתי צריך ליצור עשרות חפצים ובגדים אשר יותאמו לה ויהיה ניתן להחליף בינהם. הנה דוגמא לחלק מהחפצים: (לחצו על התמונה להגדלה)

The main character can be dressed and armed in various items throughout the game, so, after creating the hero, I had to draw tens of items and clothes which had to fit him, and could be changed while playing. Here's an example for several items. (Click on the image to enlarge).

מעבר לכך, היה גם צריך ליצור כמה וכמה מפלצות קיטור ושאר דמויות שבהם נתקלים במהלך המשחק. את מפלצות הקיטור עשיתי מאוד מכאניות ונוקשות, כמעט רובוטיות.

I also had to create several steam automatons and other characters the her would meet during the game.

אח"כ הם קיבלו תנועה, הכי פשוטה ופרימיטיבית שאפשר.

And also give them the option to have some simple, almost primitive animation.

הייתה עוד המון עבודה על המשחק שכללה ציור מבוכים, חנויות, חדרים ושאר מקומות, ומה לא. הנה כמה דוגמאות:

Overall this included lots of work, like drawing mazes, stores, and other locations. And much more.

המשחק עוד לא גמור, עוד לא מושלם, אבל בהחלט עובד ומחכה לקבל אורחים. אשמח מאוד אם תתנסו בו ותעבירו לנו ביקורות והערות - חיוביות ושליליות כאחד, כדי שנדע מה לשפר ולתקן. יש באתר טופס פידבקים שאפשר למלא כדי להעיר הערות, לדווח על באגים וסתם להגיד שאתם נהנים מהמשחק מאוד. תודה!

לא מזמן הוזמן ממני איור לשער מוסף מיוחד של גלובס העוסק בדירוג האנליסטים של שוק ההון לשנת 2011. מאחר וזה לא בדיוק מדע מדויק אלא מדובר בחיזוי בלבד הדימוי הראשון שמיד קפץ לראשי וגם נראה מתאים מאוד הוא של מגדת עתידות.

Recently I was commissioned to create a cover for a special supplement for Globes newspaper which concerning stock market ranking analytics for 2011. Since this is not an exact science and just a prediction the first image I thought of is of a fortune teller.

העורך אהב את הרעיון הכללי אבל משום מה לא את כדור הבדולח. אז שיניתי לקלפי טארוט. (וגם הפכתי את האיור).

The editor liked the general idea but for some reason didn't like the crystal ball. So I changed it to tarot cards. (and I also flipped the illustration).

התקבל. עברתי לצביעה.

The rough was accepted. I proceed to coloring the image:

התבקשתי להוריד את הקלף שהוא מחזיק, כי הוא נראה למישהו שם כמו טלפון נייד.

I was asked to remove the card he's holding because someone there thought it looked like a cell phone.

ואז, התבקשתי לשנות את הדמות לחלוטין כי היא גרוטסקית. לא הסכמתי, כי לא שיניתי את הדמות בכלל משלב הסקיצה הראשון. התפשרנו על ניתוח אף קטן, וזהו. אני חושב שסקיצה המקורית, עם כדור הבדולח, הייתה טובה יותר.

And then I was asked to change his face because he is to grotesque. I refused to do that, since he didn't change from the roughs at all. We settled on a small nose job. And that's it. I think the original rough with the crystal ball was better.

סקיצות לספר פעוטות חדש | Roughs for a new book for toddlers

אני עובד על איורים לספר קרטון חדש שירכז שלושה-עשר שירים לפעוטות מאת רות אורן. חלקם ראה אור בעבר וחלקם חדשים. אילו שירים קצרים ומחורזים על כל מני חיות. הוא צפוי לראות אור בחודשים הקרובים. אני עובד כרגע על ציור האיורים בצבעי פנדה מדוללים.

בתחילה ניסיתי להתרחק מהטקסט ולהאניש במעט את החיות, אבל לדעת עורכת הספר, יעל גובר, מאחר ומדובר בספר לפעוטות, ספר ראשון לילדים, האיורים צריכים להיות נאיביים, ולא יכולים להתבסס על תחכום מטאפורי. כנראה שהיא מאוד צדקה. הסכמנו שבכל איור אכניס משהו קטן מעולם האדם. כך למשל לקוף שצמחה שיניים יש מברשת שיניים ומשחה, להיפופוטם שמשתזף על גדת האגם יש משקפי שמש, לטלה החולה יש מדחום בפה וכן הלאה.

הנה כמה סקיצות עפרון:

I am now working on a new board book that will include thirteen poems for toddlers by author Ruth Oren. Some have already been published and some are brand new. These are short rhymed poems about animals. I expect it to be published in the next few months. I am currently working on painting the illustrations with diluted oil pastels.

At first I tried to use some personification in the work, but the editor, Yael Gover, thought that since it's a book for toddlers, a first book for children, the illustrations should be naive, not too sophisticated. She was probably very right. We agreed that in each illustration I'll add just a little something from our world. For example, the young ape, whose tooth had just grown, holds a toothbrush, the sunbathing Hippo wears sunglasses and the sick lamb has a thermometer in his mouth, and so on.

Here are some pencil roughs:

התחלתי עם הפרה, שזכתה לכמה גרסאות. התחתונה היא הגרסה שנבחרה.

I began with the cow, and did several versions of it. The bottom one was the winner.

I recently went over my work from past years in order to create a presentation for a lecture about my work for illustration students in Minshar College in Tel-Aviv. I suddenly realized that over the years I made over 150 illustrations for a weekly column I regularly illustrate since 2007. It's a tiny image (5x9 cm), for a law column written by judge Boaz Okon in Yedioth Aharonot newspaper. Here are 44 images I made for this column over the years. Click on the image to enlarge.

לאחרונה עברתי על עבודותי מהשנים האחרונות כדי להכין מצגת עם עבודות מייצגות להרצאה שעלי להעביר לסטודנטים לאיור במכללת מנשר. לפתע הבנתי שבמהלך השנים הצטברו מעל 150 איורים שעשיתי לטור שבועי שאני מאייר באופן קבוע מאז 2007. מדובר באיור קטנטן של חמישה על תשעה ס"מ, למדור משפט שכותב השופט בעז אוקון במוסף ממון יום שישי של ידיעות אחרונות.

Hello from Korea | שלום מקוריאה

כשנה אחרי שהתפרסם בארץ יצא לאור לאחרונה בקוריאה הספר שאיירתי "עץ המיץ" מאת יוסי מערבי. הקרדיט למכירת הזכויות לקוריאה הוא לסוכנת הנהדרת מיכל צ'סלה.
אתמול קיבלתי את העותק של הספר. ההוצאה הקוריאנית עשתה מעט שינויים, בעיקר בעטיפה ובפורזץ, אבל בסך-הכל הספר נראה יפה. העטיפה בצבע צהוב רדיואקטיבי, אבל לא נורא.

A year after it was published in Israel "The Juice Tree" was just published in Korea as well. The credit for selling the right to Korea is for the wonderful literary agent Micke y Chesla.

I received my copy of the Korean version yesterday. The publisher made some changes, mainly to the cover (it's in radioactive yellow!) and endpapers, but overall it looks ok.

ספר חדש! A new book!

אוטוטו מגיע לחנויות ספר חדש שאיירתי - שני חברים וקסם מאת יוסי מערבי, בהוצאת הקיבוץ המאוחד ובעריכת יונה טפר. זה הספר השני שיוסי ואני מוציאים יחדיו. קדם לו עץ המיץ שיצא לאור לפני שנה וזכה לביקורות נלהבות.
את הסקיצות כבר ראיתם והנה הצצה ראשונה לאיורים גמורים מתוך הספר.

A new book I illustrated will reach the bookstores within a couple of weeks. Friendship and Magic by Yossi Maaravi. This is the second book Yossi and I publish together. The first one - The Juice Tree, was published a year ago and received some very good reviews.

חדש וישן | New & Old

היום חתמתי על חוזה ייצוג חדש עם סוכנות בגרמניה שתייצג אותי במדינות דוברות גרמנית באירופה - גרמניה, אוסטריה, שוויץ, לוקסמבורג וליכטנשטיין. נקווה שהדבר יוביל לכמה עבודות חדשות.

נתבקשתי על ידי הסוכנות לשלוח כמה שיותר דוגמאות לעבודות שלי והם יבחרו את הטובות ביותר לשוק הגרמני. עברתי על כל העבודות מהשנים האחרונות ובינהן גיליתי איור נסיון נחמד שעשיתי להוצאת כנרת לפני כשנה לספרה של עדנה מזי"א - "סבתא, עוד פעם!". למרות שמאוד רציתי לאייר את הספר האיור שלי לא התקבל. עכשיו שפתחתי את הקובץ גיליתי שזה דווקא איור די נחמד. חבל.

Today I signed a new contract with a German illustrators agency to represent me in Germany and other German-speaking counties in Europe. Hopefully it will lead to some new assignments.
I was asked by the agency to send a few more examples of my work and they will choose the best of there for the German market. I went through my works from recent years and amongst them I found a nice tryout illustration I did a year ago for a book by Edna Mazya - "Grandma, again!". Although I really wanted to illustrate the book my work was not accepted. I now opened the file and found it to be quite nice. Too bad.

The Children’s Courtyard

לפני כחודש קיבלתי פניה ממשרד הפרסום קמפבל-אוולד מארה"ב לגבי איורים לאתר אינטרנט של בית-ספר בשם - Children’s Courtyard. מדובר במוסד שבו לומדים מגיל גן ועד גיל 13 וישנה תוכנית מיוחדת בה התלמידים הגדולים יותר חונכים את הצעירים ועוזרים להם ללמוד. היה לי שבוע בדיוק לעשות את שני האיורים, מתוכו הייתי חמישה ימים במילואים, ולכן העבודה נעשתה בערך ביום עבודה אחד. מדובר בשני איורים - אחד בראש דף האינטרנט והשני בתחתיתו. כמו כן, הייתי צריך לצייר עוד חמישה אייקונים קטנים. השכר, אגב, היה גבוה משכר שמקבלים בארץ על איור ספר ילדים שלם.

בשבוע שעבר הוזמנו ממני עוד שני איורים דומים לאתר - הפעם בגרסאת חורף. עדכון בקרוב.

About a month ago I was contacted by Campbell-Ewald Advertising in Detroit, and was asked to create illustrations for a school website named Children’s Courtyard. It's a daycare type school with a mix of students from infants to 13 years old . One of Children’s Courtyards unique qualities is to offer a “junior counselor program” where the junior children interact with the younger ones.

I had exactly one week for this assignment, which included top and bottom illustrations and 5 small icons.

Last week I was asked to create two more similar illustrations for this website - this time a winter scene.

רוני מקרוני - Roni Macaroni

לפני כמה חודשים כתבתי כאן לגבי ספר חדש שאני עובד עליו - רוני מקרוני לא אוהבת חבורות. זה הספר הרביעי בסדרה מאת מירי רוזובסקי בהוצאת כנרת ובעריכת יעל גובר. את הספרים הקודמים בסדרה איירה מרב סלומון ועל העיצוב אחראי אבנר הברפלד.
השבוע הספר הודפס והנה כמה איורים מתוכו. תהנו. (לחצו על התמונות להגדלה).

A few months ago I wrote here about a new book I worked on - Roni Macaroni doesn't Like Gangs. This is the fourth book in a series by Miri Rozovsky, edited by Yael Gover. The previous books in the series were illustrated by Merav Salomon, and the design is by Avner Haberfeld.

אני עובד כרגע על כמה פרוייקטים במקביל. אחד מהם הוא ספרה החדש של מירי רוזובסקי, רוני מקרוני לא אוהבת חבורות (שם זמני). זה הוא הספר הרביעי בסדרה. את תפקיד המאייר ירשתי ממרב סלומון שאיירה את שלושת הספרים הקודמים בסדרה והייתה עסוקה מדי לפרוייקט. מאחר ומדובר בסדרה מוכרת וותיקה מוטלת עלי משימה לא פשוטה - לשמור על המראה הכללי של גיבורת הספר, אך כמובן לא להעתיק את סגנונה של מרב. הרפרנסים במקרה זה הם הספרים הקודמים בסדרה. מרב ציירה את רוני, גיבורת הספר, כילדה רזה, עם שיער קוצני עם שתי קוקיות ונמשים על פניה. אלו כל האלמנטים שניסיתי לשמור עליהם, ואת השאר כבר המצאתי בעצמי.

I am currently working on several projects at the same time. One of them is Miri Rozovsky's new book, Roni Macaroni Doesn't Like Gangs (temporary name). This is the fourth book in the series. I've inherited the illustration job from Merav Salomon, who illustrated the previous three books in the series, but was now too busy to take on a new project. Since this is a well known series I have a complicated job - to preserve the general look of the book's main character, but of course not to copy Merav's style. So my references this time were the previous books on the series. Merav drew Roni, the main character, as a skinny girl with spiky hair, two ponytails, and freckles on her nose. These are all the elements I tried to preserve from the previous books.

הספר אמור להיות קל לקריאה ולכן הוא כתוב במשפטים מחורזים וקצרים, ומשולבות בו בועות דיבור, גם הן מחורזות. למעשה מדובר ביצור-כלאיים, בין ספר ילדים רגיל לבין קומיקס. ומאחר וכמעט ומעולם לא עסקתי בקומיקס, שילוב בועות הדיבור במקומות הנכונים, בסדר הנכון ובלי להפריע לקומפוזיציה יותר מדי הנו אתגר אמיתי.

This is supposed to be a very easy book to read so it is written in short rhymed sentences, and combines speech bubbles, also rhymed. This book is a hybrid of an easy-reading book and a comics book. And since I have very little experience with comics, combining the speech bubbles in the right places and order, without disrupting the composition too much is a real challenge.

טרה עושה מווּ, אבל לא איתי | Tara goes Mooo, but not with me

לפני כארבעה חודשים פנו אלי ממשרד העיצוב עדלי ושות' כדי שאאייר פרה בשביל סדרת מוצרים חדשה, (ובאותו הזמן סודית ביותר), לטרה. שמחתי על ההזדמנות ועשיתי מספר סקיצות. אחרי שניים-שלושה נסיונות הם לפתע הפסיקו לענות לי. כעבור חודש של נסיונות הצלחתי ליצור קשר עם המעצבת, היחידה שבאמת טרחה לבדוק מה קורה עם הסקיצות, ורק אז הבנתי שאין כוונה להמשיך לעבוד איתי. טרה חשבו שמה שעשיתי ילדותי מדי ולא מספיק נחמד.

היום התפרסם באתר הנהדר סמליל קו המוצרים החדש של טרה, ובו מככבת פרה אחרת, במקום הפרה הנחמדה שאני עשיתי להם. כמה חבל.

About four months ago I was asked by the design firm Adlai & Partners to illustrate a cow for a new (and then top secret!) product line by Tara Dairy. I was happy for the opportunity and created several roughs. After two-three rounds of sketches they suddenly disappeared and did not answer my calls. A month later I managed to contact the designer, the only person there who really bothered to check for me what is going on with the project, and only then I realized there's no intention to continue the project with me. At Tara Dairy they thought what I did was too childish and not lovable enough.

Today the excellent website Samlil revealed Tara's new line of products, in which an anonymous computerized cow stars. What a shame.

עבודה על ספר חדש | Working on a new book

אני עובד בימים אילו על איורים לספר ילדים חדש בהוצאת הקיבוץ המאוחד. הוא עדיין מחוסר שם, אך כתב אותו יוסי מערבי, איתו גם עבדתי על הספר עץ המיץ. הספר החדש מתרחש באותו כפר בו התרחשה עלילת הספר הקודם. שני חברים חובבי קסמים מוצאים כלב עזוב ורבים בינהם של מי הוא יהיה. למחרת מגיע לכפר במקרה הקוסם החביב עליהם וזה מציע להם פתרון קסום ופשוט לבעיה, שבסופו של דבר כמובן נפתרת. סיימתי עכשיו את העבודה על הסקיצות והנה כמה מהן.

I'm working now on illustrations for a new children's book. It is still nameless, but it was written by Yossi Maaravi, with whom I worked with on the book called The Juice Tree. This book takes place in the same village as the previous book. Two magic-enthusiasts friends find an abandoned dog and fight each other to determine to whom it will belong. The next day their favorite magician arrives to the village and gives them a simple solution to the problem, which eventually solves itself. I have just finished working on the sketches, and here are some examples.

Here is the magician's assistant, on an exceptionally tall unicycle, posting the announcement of the magician's arrival to the village. In the front the magician's monkey pops out as well...

הנה עוזרו של הקוסם, על חד-אופן גבוה במיוחד, מדביק את המודעה לקראת הופעתו של הקוסם בכפר. בחזית על העץ הקוף של הקוסם מציץ אף הוא.

שלו, ומאחוריו, על אותו חד אופן גבוהה ועם מזוודה גדולה על הגב, עוזרו הנאמן של הקוסם.

And here is the magician himself, on his head the monkey again, above him his very own dragon and in the back, on the unicycle and with the heavy luggage on his back, the magician's faithful assistant.

מאחר ומדובר בספר המשכי לקודם החלטתי לשמור על אפיון הדמויות מהספר הקודם ואף שילבתי פה ושם גם דמויות ממנו. מאחר ובספר הקודם ציירתי הרבה עצים המשכתי בנטיעתם גם בספר זה.

Since this is a second book in the series I had to conserve the same characteristics of the previous book. I also combined some of the characters from it here and there. Since on the first book I drew many tress I decided to keep on planting them on this books as well.

שני החברים, האחד ילד רועה צאן והשני ילד לולן, חובבי קסמים מושבעים. נעזרתי בתרנגולות כדי שיעזרו להם להצליח בקסמיהם וזורקות להם ביצי הפתעה מתחת למפת השולחן ודרך מגבעת הקסמים. בגרסא מוקדמת יותר ציירתי מתחת לשולחן אפרוחים שעומדים בתור לטרמפולינה שמקפיצה אותם מתחת השולחן דרך הכובע, אך הסופר והעורכת חשבו שישנם כאלו שעשוים לראות זאת בעין לא יפה, כאילו הילדים מתעללים באפרוחים.

The two friends, one a shepherd and the other grows chickens, are keen magic enthusiasts. I used the hens to help them do some "magic" and they throw eggs from under the tablecloth and through the cylinder hat. On an earlier version I drew chicks waiting in line for a trampoline under the table and jumping through instead, but the author and editor thought there may be some who may see this as animal abuse.

אני מנסה לאחרונה להגיע לזויות מעניינות יותר באיורים שלי. כמו למשל בשני איורים אילו בהם שני החברים צועדים לביתם. הדבר נותן לקורא יותר עניין ומגוון ויזואלי, ולי יותר אתגר במהלך העבודה.

I recently try to create some interesting angles in my work, for example like in these two following sketches in which the two friends walk home. It gives the reader a more interesting visual experience, and to me it creates some new challenges.

על הגשר הקט 3 | Upon the Little Bridge 3

האח הידד, הספר החדש הודפס וצריך להגיע לחנויות היום או מחר. המפיק האגדי של הוצאת מטר, יואב רייס, עשה עבודה מעולה בבית הדפוס והצבעים יצאו בדיוק כמו שתכננתי. למי שלא עקב, פרסמתי ברשומות קודמות מעט מתהליכי העבודה על הספר. כאן, וכאן. אין לי באמת מה לומר מעבר ל-רוצו לקנות, ולכן אתן לצילומים הטריים (ולסרטון קטן באיכות נמוכה) שצילמתי הרגע לדבר בשמי. תהנו.

Hurray, the book was printed and should reach the bookstores today or tomorrow. Matar Publishing House's legendary producer Yoav Reiss did an excellent job at the press and the colors came out just as I planned them to. For those of you who didn't follow, I wrote about some of the illustration process here, and there. I have nothing much to say, I'll let these fresh new images (and this low-res flip book movie clip) speak for me. Enjoy.

As promised, here are some images from the new book I illustrated - Upon the Little Bridge, to be published in a week or two.

כמובטח, הפעם אחשוף איורים מתוך הספר האחרון שאיירתי - "על הגשר הקט", שאמור לצאת לאור תוך שבוע-שבועיים.

Elad, The main character of the story, had several versions in my sketches till I found the right one. At first I wanted to make him a bit strange, so I drew him with a ridiculous amount of hair, with eyes too small, or too large, with a nose too small, or a nose too large etc. The author and the publisher wanted him to be more "regular" and cuter. I think that at the end we met somewhere in the middle. Here are several versions of him, and one illustration from the book showing what the finally-selected Elad looks like.

דמותו של אלעד , גיבור הספר, עברה כמה וכמה שלבים וגרסאות עד שגובשה הדמות הסופית שמככבת בספר. אני רציתי לעשות אותו קצת מוזר בהתחלה. עשיתי גרסאות בו יש לו המון שיער, גרסאות בו יש לו עיניים קטנות מדי וגרסאות עם עיניים גדולות מדי, גרסאות עם אף קטן וגרסאות עם אף גדול. הסופר וההוצאה דווקא כיוונו לגיבור חמוד ו"רגיל" יותר ובסופו של דבר נדמה לי שנפגשנו איפשהו באמצע. הנה כמה גרסאות של הגיבור, ואיור אחד מתוך הספר שמראה איך הוא נראה בסופו של דבר.

Most of the illustrations in the book remained rather similar to the early sketches, but on one of the last sketches for the book I drew a car in which the family drives back home. The author was not pleased with a car in a book all about nature and suggested they can all ride bicycles. I thought it was a good idea, but instead of drawing three bicycles I decided they can all ride a double one. Here is the sketch showing the car, and the final image showing the bicycle. (By the way, I didn't want to draw the helmets, but the editor insisted. The horns on the child's helmet is my wife's idea!)

רוב רובם של האיורים נשארו מאוד דומים לשלב הסקיצה, אבל באחת הסקיצות האחרונות ציירתי מכונית שבה המשפחה נוסעת חזרה הביתה. למחבר הפריע שפתאום מופיעה מכונית בספר שכולו טבע והציע שכולם ירכבו על אפניים. חשבתי שזה רעיון טוב מאוד, אבל במקום לצייר שלושה זוגות אופניים החלטתי לעשות אופניים משפחתיים. הנה הסקיצה הראשונה, ומולה התוצאה הסופית. (אגב, לא רציתי לצייר להם קסדות, אבל העורכת התעקשה. הקרניים על הקסדה של הילד הם רעיון של אשתי!).

Another illustration that changed a bit is the one in which the hero can't find his way back to his parents and sits in despair on the banks of the creek. The sketch showed him in a strange angle, or as a colleague of mine said - it looked like a good illustration for an editorial about child abuse... In the final illustration his angle completely changed, he holds a leaf in his hand, a butterfly sits on a mushroom in front of him and a concerned Coypu on a rock looks at him.

עוד איור שהשתנה קצת הוא איור בו הגיבור מתייאש מלחפש את דרכו חזרה, ומתיישב נואש על גדת הנחל. בסקיצה איירתי אותו בזוית קצת מוזרה, מעט מכונס מדי בעצמו, או כמו שאמר לי עמית למקצוע - זה נראה כמו איור טוב לכתבה על התעללות בילדים. בגרסא הסופית הזוית שלו השתנתה לחלוטין, נוסף עלה שהוא מחזיק בידו, פרפר על פטריה מולו, ובתוך המים, על סלע, נוטריה שמביטה בו בדאגה.

Last week I've been asked by HaPinkas, an online magazine for Children's Culture and Literature to start writing reviews for children books, concentrating on the illustration rather then the story. This is something almost non-existent in Israel, and I was happy to give it a try. Upon the little Bridge 1

Next month a new book I illustrated will be published. It is called "Upon the Little Bridge", and was written by Eilam Ben-Dror and will be published my Matar publishing House.

The book is about a small boy who travels with his parents on the banks of a small creek, and then gets lost. He then asks several animals for help finding his way back to his parents. Each animal explains to the boy it is very simple - all he has to do is advance the way the animal advances - a bird tells him to fly, a frog to hop, a caterpillar to crawl, etc. The story is well written in rhymes, and the minute I received the text from the publisher I knew this book is a must for me.

This will be the 8th or 9th book I worked on to be published, but it's the first time I dared to work on a book with diluted oil pastels. Till this book I always colored the images with Photoshop, but this time I wanted to try something different, and diluted oil pastels was always a technique I felt comfortable with.

In this post I will show you the roughs for this book. In one of the following posts I will show you the final images.

בחודש הבא יצא לאור ספר חדש שאיירתי. הוא נקרא "על הגשר הקט" וכתב אותו עילם בן-דרור. הספר יראה אור בהוצאת מטר.

הספר הוא על ילד קטן שמטייל עם הוריו על גדות נחל קטן, ואז הולך לאיבוד. בשביל למצוא את דרכו בחזרה הוא מבקש עזרה מחיות שהוא פוגש בדרך. כל חיה מסבירה לו שהדרך חזרה פשוטה מאוד, כל מה שהוא צריך לעשות הוא להתקדם בדרך שאותה חיה מתקדמת: הציפור אומרת לו לעוף, הצפרדע לקפוץ, הזחל לזחול וכן הלאה.

הסיפור מסופר נהדר בחרוזים, ומזכיר קצת ספרים של פעם. ברגע שקיבלתי את הטקסט ידעתי שזה בדיוק הספר בשבילי.

זה יהיה הספר השמיני או התשיעי שיצא לאור עם איורים שלי, אבל זאת הפעם הראשונה בה העזתי לעבוד על הספר בצבעי פנדה מדוללים. עד היום צבעתי את כל הספרים הקודמים בפוטושופ, אבל הפעם רציתי לנסות משהו אחר, ובצבעי פנדה מדוללים תמיד הרגשתי בנוח.

זאת טכניקה שמאפשרת עבודה מאוד מלוכלכת וכיפית עם צבעי פנדה, אבל מצד שני מאוד מדויקת בגלל האופן בו אני עובד.

בפוסט הזה אראה לכם את הסקיצות לספר. באחד מהפוסטים הבאים אראה לכם את האיורים הסופיים.

התחלתי בעבודה על סטוריבורד. חילקתי את הסיפור לעמודים וקשקשתי מה שחשבתי שצריך להופיע בכל איור. מה ולא איך.

אחרי אישור הסטוריבורד ע"י ההוצאה עברתי לסקיצות מתקדמות יותר, בהן כבר ציירתי כל איור ברמה יותר גבוהה עם יותר פרטים. הנה כמה דוגמאות:

In my first post here I shared with you the roughs for two stories I had to illustrate for Éditions Lito in France. I have finally finished working on these and I'm happy to share the final work with you.

These were made with diluted oil pastels and a black pencil for the details. After scannning the images I also altered the colours with with Photoshop and cleaned my messy work.

This was a difficult job as I had to give as much info as possible in a very small space, around the text.

These will be published in an anthology of stories about farm animals in France soon.

ברשומה הראשונה שלי כאן העלתי סקיצות לשני סיפורים שהייתי צריך לאייר להוצאת צרפתית סופסוף גמרתי את העבודה על האיורים ואני שמח לחלוק אתכם את התוצאה הסופית.
האיורים נעשו בצבעי פנדה מדוללים עם עפרון שחור לפרטים. אחרי הסריקה שיניתי את הצבעים ובעיקר ניקיתי את העבודה המלוכלכת שלי.
זאת הייתה עבודה די קשה מפני שהייתי צריך להכניס הרבה פרטים לחלל די קטן מסביב לטקסט.

האיורים יתפרסמו באנתולוגיה על חיות משק בצרפת מתישהו בקרוב.

שמואל כץ Shmuel Katz

One of Israel's first cartoonist and illustrator Shmuel Katz died this Friday.

Katz, who was an active illustrator since the 1940's, illustrated many books and was mainly known for his children books illustrations, though he did so much more. He won many award for his work including the Hans Christian Award.

I didn't know him personally, but I always regarded his work with great appreciation. That's why I was very pleased when I was asked by Yedioth Aharonot Newspaper to illustrate a cover to one of it's supplement in his memory.

Maybe his most known work is a book called "A Flat for Rent" by author Lea Goldberg. Its cover is well known to almost everyone who grew up as a child in Israel. That's why I chose to make a tribute to him by illustrating that same cover, only with a few changes - the animals sad, a death notice on the wall, and flower bouquets on the door step. I worked with diluted oil pastels once again.

I did try to mimic his style but also to put in something of my own. Because of the attempt to make it as similar to his work as possible I worked on some parts with no contour, something I never do but then realized it's a great pleasure. I hope to dare do this again soon. So maybe Shmuel Katz taught me something in his death.

ביום שישי הלך לעולמו אחרון ראשוני הקריקטוריסטים והמאיירים הישראליים, שמואל כץ.

כץ, שהיה מאייר פעיל משנות ה-40, אייר עשרות ספרים והתפרסם בעיקר באיורי ספרי הילדים שלו, אם כי עשה הרבה מעבר לזה. הוא זכה בהרבה פרסים על עבודתו, כולל עיטור הנס כריסטיאן אנדרסן של ה IBBY.

לא הכרתי אותו באופן אישי, אבל הערכתי מאוד את עבודתו. לכן שמחתי מאוד כשהתבקשתי ממוסף "24 שעות" של ידיעות אחרונות לאייר להם שער לזכרו.

אולי הספר המוכר ביותר שהוא אייר הוא "דירה להשכיר" מאת לאה גולדברג. עטיפת הספר מוכרת כמעט לכל מי שגדל בישראל. לכן בחרתי לעשות מחווה לאותו השער וציירתי את אותו האיור עם שינויים קלים - כל החיות מאותו איור מפורסם עצובות, מודעת אבל על הקיר, וזרי פרחים על מפתן הדלת. גם הפעם - צבעי פנדה מדוללים. ניסיתי לחקות את המקור מצד אחד אבל כן להכניס משהו משלי מצד שני. בגלל הנסיון לחקות אותו עבדתי בחלק מהמקרים ללא קונטור, מה שהתגלה כתענוג אמיתי, ואולי אנסה לעשות כך שוב בעתיד. אולי למדתי משהו משמואל כץ במותו.

Before I forget - you can now get email updates when there are new posts on my blog, just fill your email address on the form to the right.

It is finally springtime, and Passover is next week. This is the time I usually mail out a card to all past and present clients of mine, wishing them happy holidays and of course reminding them of my existence. And of being available for any freelance projects of course.

This year I chose to use on of the illustrations from a new book I illustrated - "On the Small Bridge", which is supposed to be published in May.

I will write a long post about this wonderful new book sometime soon, after they are printed.

השנה התמשתי באיור מתוך ספר ילדים חדש שאיירתי בשם "על הגשר הקט" מאת עילם בן דרור אשר יראה אור בקרוב, בשבוע הספר, בהוצאת מטר הנפלאה.

בקרוב אכתוב פוסט ארוך על הספר המצוין הזה. בטח אחרי שהוא יהיה מודפס ומוכן.

Welcome to my new blog. This is the first post, hurray! I hope there will be many more to come.

I plan to give you a glimpse of my current work, share my thoughts and work process, and let you know when there are new updates. The idea for this blog came to my head after becoming jealous of Ofra Amit and Keren Tagar, both are wonderful israeli illustrators who recently opened a blog similar to this one. Their blogs are so nice, I wanted one too.

For those of you who prefer Hebrew - Don't worry, I plan this blog to be bi-lingual. Scroll down for the Hebrew version. Still, I would prefer English comments from you, as my goal is to make myself world famous and super-rich, so I could retire when I'm 40 years old. Maybe then this blog will change to a blog about vegetable-gardening.

For those of you who prefer English, bear with me if I make some grammar or spelling mistakes.

So, I will begin by giving you a glimpse about some rough drafts for two stories I now illustrate for Éditions Lito in France. This will be a book about farm animals, with many short stories written by several writers, each illustrated by a different illustrator.

I got two stories to illustrate, one about a good fat cow who saves the day, and the other is a love story between a chicken and a wooden rooster. The publisher asked me to put as much info as I can to a rather small place, and noted they like the use of vignettes. I already got some comments from the publisher and I need to make some small changes, but overall this will stay as it is now.

I plan to color these with oil pastels and to finish it all by the end of the month.

ברוכים הבאים לבלוג החדש שלי. זה הפוסט הראשון, האח וגם הידד! אני מקווה שיהיו כאן עוד הרבה כאלו.

אני מתכנן לתת לכם להציץ לעבודה הנוכחית שלי, לחלוק את מחשבותיי ותהליך העבודה שלי, ולעדכן אותכם בכל מה שחדש, כשהיהיה כזה. הרעיון לבלוג זה בא מתוך קנאה בעפרה עמית וקרן תגר, מאיירות מעולות שפתחו לאחרונה בלוגים משלהן. קינאתי ורציתי גם.

אני מתכנן שהבלוג יהיה דו-לשוני, אבל מעדיף שתגיבו באנגלית, בכל זאת המטרה שלי היא להחשף לעולם הרחב, להיות עשיר ומפורסם כדי שאוכל לצאת לפנסיה בגיל 40. אולי אז הבלוג הזה יהפוך לבלוג של טיפוח גינות ירק.

ובכל מקרה כדאי גם שתקראו את הטקסט באנגלית, כדי שתוכלו לצחוק על שגיאות הדקדוק שלי.

נתחיל בהצצה לסקיצות לאיורים חדשים שאני עושה להוצאה בצרפת בשם Éditions Lito. זה יהיה ספר על חיות משק, ובו הרבה סיפורים קצרים שנכתבים ע"י סופרים שונים וכל אחד מאויר ע"י מאייר אחר.

קיבלתי שני סיפורים לאייר - האחד על פרה טובה ושמנה שמצילה את החווה, והשני הוא סיפור אהבה בין תרנגולת לבין תרנגול שמגולף מעץ. המו"ל ביקש שאדחוס כמה שיותר מידע בחלל די קטן, וציין שהם אוהבים שימוש בוִינְייטות.

כבר קיבלתי הערות מהמו"ל ואני צריך לעשות כמה שינויים קטנים, אבל באופן כללי האיור ישאר פחות או יותר כמו שזה עכשיו.

אני מתכנן לצבוע הכל בצבעי פנדה ולסיים את האיור עד סוף החודש.
